VanBasco Karaoke Player is a freeware program that lets you sing a long at home.
VanBasco Karaoke Player is a reasonably sophisticated and customizable karaoke program. It’s also freeware, which means you can use it whenever and for as long as you like without paying a thing. Sound quality is great, and while there are certainly some professional programs that sound better — and cost more — the performance here is pretty impressive considering its freeware.
This player supports KAR files, which is the karaoke format, as well as popular MIDI formats, such as MID and RMI. It would be nice if the program had broader format support, of course. As it is, you’ll have to focus your collection on the supported formats or perform the conversions yourself.
VanBasco Karaoke Player also has powerful support for playlists, and you can create any number of playlists as well as build playlists made up of other playlists. The app does have a search mechanism, which can generate a large playlist, which you can use outright or draw from. However, the search is painfully slow, and you’re probably better off searching through Windows and making your own.
You can also adjust songs on a per-song basis and have access to characteristics like volume, speed and key. It’s also possible to mute one or multiple instruments in order to change the dynamic of playback. These changes can be made on the fly or you can make them in advance and assign those settings to one or more playlists.
VanBasco Karaoke Player also features a skinnable user interface that’s reminiscent of Winamp. Several skins are selectable by default and there at least three dozen — perhaps more — that you can download. A lot of users will likely prefer a less late-90s-style UI, and perhaps there’s a skin that does that. In the meantime, the outdated UI doesn’t really hinder the fun factor this program delivers.
